Small City, Long Driveways
Asphalt paving in Cove is about rural-style properties close to the city. Cove is one of the smallest cities around Baytown, with 525 residents in 2020 on about 1.3 square miles on the west side of Old River Lake, an arm of the Trinity River. Interstate 10 passes the north end of town at exit 803, Baytown is about 13 miles to the southwest, and Houston is 35 miles west.
A long fight to be its own town
The area was first called Winfree's Cove after pioneer settler A. B. J. Winfree, and the county's first cotton gin opened there in 1871. In 1970 Beach City annexed the community; Baytown sued to stop it in 1971, Beach City let its claim go in 1973, and Cove incorporated on its own on May 23, 1973. That independence shows in how the town looks: larger lots, homes set back from the road, and driveways that are often long and sometimes still gravel.
Water nearby
With Old River Lake on the east and an elevation of around 30 feet, Cove has the slow-draining clay common to the area. Long drives need a consistent base and a surface shaped to move water off to the sides. Where a driveway crosses a ditch, the culvert under it needs to be sound before we pave over it.
What we usually do in Cove
- Gravel-to-asphalt conversions on long driveways
- Base rebuilding where old drives have rutted
- Parking and turnaround areas for trucks, boats and trailers
- Sealcoating and edge repairs on existing asphalt
Cove is a city, so we check its requirements, and Chambers County's where a county road is involved, before work that touches the road.
Getting started
We visit, measure, look at the ditch and culvert at the road, and write up the job with each part priced. Long drives are often best paved in one continuous run so there are no cold joints, and we plan material deliveries to make that possible.
Lake-side ground
Lots near Old River Lake can stay wet for days after heavy rain. A driveway built on that ground needs a firm, well-drained base and a surface raised slightly above the surrounding yard so water runs off instead of sitting against the edges. Where a driveway crosses low ground, adding a culvert or a swale can keep water moving instead of pooling against the pavement.
Maintenance
Once paved, a Cove driveway lasts longest with cracks filled promptly and a sealcoat every few years. We can set up a simple maintenance plan if you would like reminders.
A quiet place to live
Cove has grown slowly, from 323 people in 2000 to 525 in 2020, and it has kept its rural feel. Many owners have been on their land a long time and want a driveway that lasts, not a quick fix. We build to that standard.
Cost range
National guides list new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot. On long drives, the per-foot cost can come down because of scale, while culvert and base work add to it. We itemize everything.
