Restriping Is When ADA Rules Apply
Parking lot striping looks simple, but restriping is the moment accessible parking has to meet current rules. The Department of Justice says that when a lot is restriped, the accessible spaces must be provided in the number and design the 2010 ADA Standards require. That means the right count of accessible spaces for the lot size, access aisles of the right width, at least one van-accessible space for every six accessible spaces, and signs mounted at the right height.
What we stripe
- Standard stalls and angled stalls
- Accessible spaces, access aisles and symbols
- Arrows, stop bars and crosswalks
- Fire lanes and loading zones
- Curb paint and stenciled words or numbers
Restripe or new layout
Restriping follows the existing lines. A new layout, after paving or a change in how the lot is used, costs more because it is measured out from scratch; HomeGuide puts it at 20 to 50 percent more than restriping. A new layout is also the chance to fix traffic flow, add spaces or move accessible spaces closer to the entrance.
Timing
Striping paint dries quickly in warm weather, but it needs clean, dry pavement. After new paving or a sealcoat, we stripe once the surface is ready. Lots are done in sections or after hours so the business stays open.
Weather and wear
Sun and rain fade lines faster on the Gulf Coast than in milder climates, and truck traffic scuffs them at entrances. Many lots here need restriping every year or two to stay sharp.
Accessible space basics
Under the 2010 Standards, a car-accessible space is at least 96 inches wide with an access aisle of at least 60 inches, and a van-accessible space is either 132 inches wide with a 60-inch aisle or 96 inches wide with a 96-inch aisle. Accessible spaces and aisles need to be nearly level, with slopes no steeper than 1:48, and signs are mounted so the bottom is at least 60 inches above the ground. We lay out spaces to those numbers and point out where the existing pavement slope may be a problem.
Fire lanes and curbs
Fire lane markings and red curbs are set by the local fire marshal. We follow the requirements you have been given, and paint lettering and curbs to match.

How It Works
1. Count and measure
We count spaces, check accessible spaces against the 2010 Standards and note faded markings.
2. Layout plan
Restripe or new layout agreed in writing.
3. Clean and paint
Pavement blown clean and lines painted section by section.
4. Reopen
Areas reopened once paint is dry.

Parking Lot Striping Questions
How many accessible spaces does my lot need?
It depends on the total number of spaces, following the table in the 2010 ADA Standards; for example, a lot with 1 to 25 spaces needs at least one, and one of every six accessible spaces must be van-accessible. We count your lot and lay them out to the table.
Do I have to update accessible spaces when I restripe?
Yes. The DOJ says restriping is an alteration, so the accessible spaces must meet the 2010 Standards in number and design.
How often should a lot be restriped?
When lines are hard to see. In strong sun and heavy rain, that is often every year or two, and right after any sealcoat.
Can you stripe on a weekend?
Often, yes. We schedule around business hours and church services.
Do you stripe new lots after paving?
Yes, once the surface is ready, using the layout agreed in writing.
